Ritz Carlton Opens

Guess who's finally open and lookin' pretty? The Ritz Carlton, Herzliya of course. Israel's "only luxury resort" opened its doors a few weeks ago. The 197 room hotel, located adjacent to the Herzliya Marina, offers an international standard of service and accommodations never before seen in Israel. Supposedly, that is. While the two reviews on TripAdvisor are extremely positive, praising everything except for the breakfast ("not the usual extravaganza like other Israeli hotels"), the pictures on the website present the hotel as being elegant, if not spectacular, and certainty not on par with the Ritz in other locales. Nontheless, we will award the Ritz Carlton the best option in Herzliya, besting the dated Daniel (although ongoing renovations seek to fix that) and confused Dan Accadia. Although, another competitor recently sprang up: The Benjamin Herzliya Business Hotel! No, it won't quite compete with the Ritz, but it looks modern, clean, and attractive, although lacking in services (no restaurant or pool). We found rates for the Ritz Carlton at $375/night, compared to $342 at the Dan Accadia and $202 at the Benjamin. Maybe we can forgo the pool? Oh, and for those willing to brave the Daniel during renovations: $228/night. Not bad at all!

West Boutique Ashdod

The West Boutique has been open for over six months now, and continues to soar above the non-existent competition in Ashdod. (We're truly beginning to give up on the Crowne Plaza Ashdod, which we have been eagerly awaiting for several years and have not heard any updates from). The West Ashdod is located just opposite Lido Beach and close to the "romantic Ashdod promenade," whatever that might be. The hotel features 113 suites with balconies overlooking the sea. Amenities include a chef restaurant from Guy Peretz,a cafe, a spa, fitness room, and a covered seasonal swimming pool open to the outside (but we would have liked to see a nicer, heated pool...) The hotel also features an intimate library, which is a trend we have begun to see in hotels around the world. Reviews are very positive on TripAdvisor, with reviewers touting the location, the dining (breakfast includes "a choice of caviar"), the beach, the spacious rooms, and the staff. Rates are a super affordable $171 for a deluxe suite next week, which we would definitely snap up.

Hotel Indigo Ramat Gan

What if we told you that a hotel had opened three months ahead of schedule (In Israel, no less)! Pretty impressive, huh. What if we told you that the aforementioned hotel also has what we believe to be the coolest hotel pool in all of Israel? Gasps. Well, it seems that the Hotel Indigo has managed to wow most of its early guests, earning it the #1 hotel spot in Ramat Gan on TripAdvisor. To be fair, there are only three hotels in Ramat Gan, and the Hotel Indigo is waayyy ahead of the competition. The hotel is described as the "first real 5 star boutique hotel in Tel Aviv”(take that, Hotel Montefiore!) “5+++ boutique hotel” and "the best hotel in Israel - there is no other like it", as well as “A Diamond in the Diamond District.” The eleven story hotel features a spa and fitness center, French-Mediterranean Blackstone Bistro and Lounge and 91 modern rooms with free Wifi, a club level floor, and suites with balconies and Jacuzzis. We especially love the bathrooms with their distinctive mirrors and rainhead showers. "Yeah, and what about the pool," we hear you anxiously asking. Hotel Indigo features a rooftop pool overlooking the skyline of Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan and with one part of it suspended 42 meters above street level and surrounded by glass walls. This is very similar to the pool at the Joule Hotel in Dallas, Texas. The pool deck, called B On Top, features a nice relaxing area and Tapas bar, with beautiful views as well. Reviewers gush that "the best thing about the hotel is the rooftop pool . GREAT views of Tel Aviv, very modern and chic feeling. nice bar," "the pool is probably the best part of the hotel, and "the roof top is a definitely the best part of the whole experience! The view is to die for, glass pool, and a gorgeous deck... What more can you ask for, perfect spot for drinks." However, one sourpuss writes, "The pool is more like a large Jacuzzi." Rates for next week in a standard room start at $215, about which one reviewer reflects, "I do hope prices will go down with time." Our take? Rates do seem a bit high, but this is Tel Aviv, after all, and- take a look at that pool.

Orchid Pasha Tel Aviv- Jaffa Hotel & W Tel Aviv Jaffa

For those of you who missed out on our posting about the Orchid Pasha Tel Aviv, we mentioned that the developers of the "six- star" property were "currently looking into entering into a franchise agreement with a major international luxury hotel chain, one that has not been active in Israel as yet.” Then, just last week we started hearing about the W Tel Aviv, Jaffa. After a bit of preliminary research, we determined that The Orchid Pasha and the W Tel Aviv, Jaffa were one and the same. Both were to be built in Jaffa and incorporate a historic building and have about 150 rooms. They're also both expected to open in late 2015. Here's what we initially wrote on IsraelGuest: We had been hoping for a Four Seasons, but it turns out that this hotel will be none other than the W Tel Aviv Jaffa Hotel and Residences. While we're not sure that W Hotels is a "six star" brand, we definitely think that this is a good choice for Tel Aviv. W is the hip, casual brand from Starwood, known for its modern design and youthful vibes. A W Tel Aviv was inevitable, really. But we're surprised and delighted that it will be housed in a historic building circa 1879, because it means the decor will be especially interesting. We're also eager to see if this hotel will help transform Jaffa, which is a bit sleepy compared to bustling Tel Aviv. The hotel will be designed by noted British architect John Pawson. The historic building will contain 125 rooms, and there will also be a new six story building on the site housing 38 residences. Other amenities include a spa, fitness center, and outdoor pool. The hotel is expected to open in late 2015. Interestingly,RFR Holding, the developer, also owns the W South Beach in Miami. What if there were not one, but TWO luxury hotels coming to Jaffa!? Something about the location of the W didn't seem right to us, either. We took a quick look on Google Maps, and sure enough - These are two different hotels! The Orchid Pasha is located just opposite the clock tower and on the water, while the W has a more central location. Now, if only Four Seasons would be interested...

Luxury update

Pretentious, showy, pompous, hmm...sounds like a Ritz Carlton! The luxury brand known for its stuffiness and ostentatiousness has recently unveiled the website for its Herzliya outpost, and the hotel lauds itself as "the first luxury resort in Israel." Now, we're not denying that the Ritz will be a classy property. But they seem to be laying it on a little thick, no? We must say, now that the photos are out, the hotel looks a little disappointing and underwhelming, more Israeli- wannabe five star than true Ritz Carlton. We do love the fact that every oversized room has a balcony, and those bathrooms with deep soaking tubs look gorgeous. We can't wait for this hotel to open so that we can check it out and determine for ourselves if it puts all the other resorts to shame (or even worse, to non-existence). Although, maybe the Ritz will inspire a new breed of uber-luxury resorts in Israel, which would be a win-win for all of us. We are also anxiously anticipating the opening of the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem, which also has a website up and running (and an opening date: November 2013!) The design here is very old world and elegant, this is undeniably a luxury property. The rooms are reminiscent of those at the legendary King David, offering a not-so-subtle hint at who the hotel is poised to compete with. Funny how history has repeated itself- the circa 1931 King David was built to be the Jewish answer to Mohammad Amin al-Husayni's 1929 Palace Hotel. We love the design of the indoor pool area and restaurant. The guestrooms also offer an impressive list of amenities even in the most basic rooms, including mirror embedded TV's in the bathroom, tablet room controls, and complimentary Wifi! All we can say is that we're super eager to get a tour of these hotels once they open.

Isrotel Cramim

As many of you know, we have been anxiously following the progress of the Isrotel Cramim, the luxury hotel which recently opened outside Jerusalem. The hotel opened roughly a month ago, and so far, reviews seem to be positive, with reviewers applauding the guestroom design in particular. The staff, food, and spa are also highly praised. One reviewer bemoaned the fact that there were too many babies around, to which the hotel responded that they have now changed their policy to only allow children above the age of 10. (Stupid move, Isrotel). The hotel has put a major emphasis on its Spa, evident in the hotel's official name, Cramim Resort & Spa. The 2000 meter Carmel Forest Spa features 21 treatment rooms, a full gym, health bar, sauna, Jacuzzi and two swimming pools, one outdoor and one indoor, as well as a solarium. Here at IsraelGuest, we can't help but wonder if this hotel will be a localized version of the renowned Carmel Forest Spa Resort, with its own 2,500 square meter spa. The original resort hasn't been renovated since 1997, so we'd happily make the switch to Cramim. The two resorts share many of the same features, including a mountain location with sweeping views of the surrounding area, expansive spas and relaxation areas, and impeccable food. However, the price at Cramim is another major draw: rooms here start at $360 a night (plus a 20% discount if you book before July 31st!), compared to a whopping $628 at Carmel Forest (this is full board, though). So- the next time you're looking for a weekend of R&R- head straight to Cramim.

Herods Dead Sea

The latest addition to the Herods chain has been open for a few months now, and we thought we'd have a look at how things are going. You'll recall that the hotel that houses the Herods has been through a few rebrandings over the past few years, namely (no pun intended) Sheraton, Moriah, and Leonardo. Unfortunately, with all the name changes did not come any major renovations. Finally, Herods has done a full scale renovation of the place, in an effort to restore the hotels 1960's era glory as befitting a Herods. The result is a definite improvement. All of the hotel's 223 rooms have been renovated (although some look "more renovated" than others). The Executive Garden Rooms with private pools sound particularly appealing. The indoor and outdoor pools have received some cosmetic updates, and the lobby and public spaces look beautiful, albeit not exactly to our tastes. The spa has also been completely redesigned. The hotel also built a new pier and wooden walkway on the beach. Reviews are very positive on TripAdvisor, with reviewers praising the rooms, service, and especially the food. Rates are a very reasonable $240 per night in a standard room for tonight. Still, though, we don't think that the Herods can quite compete with the Isrotel, which is still our #1 choice for the Dead Sea. UPDATE: AVOID THE EXECUTIVE GARDEN ROOMS Apparently, the so- called "Executive Garden With Pool", which offers "exclusive access to a private pool", is not so exclusive or so private either. As one reviewer writes, "We reserved a room with a private pool - be careful - it is private for our room and about 10 more, in a norrow [sic] pathway-pool. It is far from being private." The hotel confirms "You are correct. The swimming pool in front of the Garden room is shared amongst 16 Garden room guests.." That's pretty funny! Save your money and take a regular room. In other hotel news, the Royal Beach Tel Aviv has opened amidst much fanfare, and guests seem pretty happy with the new hotel!
